The Zero-Click Era: What the numbers actually reveal, and what it changes for brand teams

The Zero-Click Era
Search is changing from a click-driven model to one where AI answers questions directly. Here’s what zero-click search, AI Overviews and AI search mean for brand visibility, traffic and SEO.

For twenty years, search worked as a simple exchange. Users typed a query, engines returned pages, users clicked, brands got a visit. In 2026, most of those clicks aren’t happening. The answer is delivered inside the search interface, and users move on without leaving it.

The numbers

SparkToro’s June 2026 study, using Similarweb clickstream data, found that 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026.

The figure was 60% in 2024 and 49% in 2019.

When Google shows an AI Overview above the results, the zero-click rate rises to 83% (Bain-Dynata). In AI Mode, it reaches 93% (Semrush). Google reported at I/O 2026 that AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users, with query volume more than doubling each quarter.

The traffic loss isn’t evenly distributed. Bain & Company research found organic traffic down 15% to 25% across sectors after AI Overviews became prevalent. HubSpot has reported organic drops of 70% to 80% on the content that used to power its inbound engine. Google referrals to publishers fell roughly a third in the year ending November 2025.

The behaviour underneath

Consumers have split search into two modes: discovery and verification.

  1. Discovery is drifting toward AI tools. ChatGPT alone is at around 800 million weekly active users, roughly double a year ago. Yext’s 2026 US research found that 47% of adults used an AI tool to research a local business in the past month, and among households earning $150,000 or more, AI has already passed Google as the starting point for local searches.

  1. Verification still runs through Google. Only 5% of AI users move directly from an AI answer to a purchase. After receiving an AI recommendation, 62% search Google to verify, 58% visit the brand’s website directly, and 52% click through to the sources the AI cited.

What this changes for brand teams

The job of search has shifted. Traffic still matters most where intent is high, transactional, or navigational. Purchase-ready searches convert on Google. Local queries bring users through the door.

Top-of-funnel content is doing a different job now: it is source material for AI systems to parse and cite when users ask the question that used to be typed into a search bar. Traditional SEO handles the moment of decision. Generative and Answer Engine Optimisation handle the moment of consideration.

Seer Interactive found that brands cited in AI Overviews see 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than uncited brands on the same query. Being named in the AI answer is where the shortlist now begins.

What brand teams can do now

Only 22% of marketers currently track AI visibility (Yext, 2025). Standard analytics count sessions, not citations, and the industry hasn’t aligned on what to call citation metrics or where they belong on a dashboard.

The teams pulling ahead are auditing where their brand appears in the AI answers users are already receiving. They are investing in the source material language models pull from: structured product information, credible positioning, third-party mentions in trusted publications. And they are updating what they measure so citation share sits on the dashboard alongside sessions and rankings.
